Recommended Pairing: Spanish-Style Shrimp Ceviche
Rías Biaxas is another one of those many under-the-radar wine regions that overdelivers for the price. This wine was about ~$14 equivalent in a Mexico City Costco.
Valley de Guadalupe is one of the most famous Mexican wine regions but still relatively unknown except perhaps in Southern California and the Southwestern US. Part of the reason for this is the high, uncompetitive taxes the Mexican government charges on even exported wines. It's a shame because these are wines of place and character.
Sardinia has some amazing wines in several denomination regions. This Cannonau di Sardegna wasn't the best example of that red grape, but it was still enjoyable.
Some of the Mexican wines definitely have a bit of a rustic character to them like this one, but some of the funk blew off over time and it was still a delicious wine.
Recommended Pairing: Pasta alla Norma
We had this wine at a charming little Italian Pizzeria just around the corner from our hotel in Palanco in Mexico City for a nice relaxed lunch, around 2:00 P.M. as per local custom.
For inexpensive bubbles, crisp, bone-dry Cava is becoming my go-to sparkling wine instead of Prosecco which I find often too sweet and cloying at the under $15 price point.
Recommended Pairing: The best airport pizza you can find
Though they are often really crowded, I love the American Express Centurion lounges - the one at Houston IAH has great staff and surprisingly good wines like this one. This is the right way to start a vacation.
Some of my favorite wine experiences are when you find one that is good when and where you least expect it to be.
Recommended Pairing: Pretty much any savory dish
Postino is one of our favorite wine-centric cafes in Houston as there are several locations throughout the city and they all consistently have good food, service and excellent wines.
