A Selection of My Top Wine Knowledge Sources
Over the years I've found some great resources to learn about wine. Here's a selection of the most useful:
Wine Folly - One of the best sources of trustworthy, introductory information about all things wine. Their articles go from Wine 101 to more advanced topics and I recommend starting with their basics if you're just getting into wine. A lot of the Somms I talk to online recommend this as the starting point.
World of Wine André Mack - YouTube - André releases detailed, approachable and practical videos on a variety of wine (and spirit) topics. I most appreciate his "no BS" style and he debunks a lot of common wine myths.
Wikipedia For the "wine geek" where you really want to dive into a particular grape, or specific region, I continue to find Wikipedia to be a valuable information source.
The New York Times, Eric Asimov - I subscribe to the NYT but they usually let you browse a few articles per month for free. Eric Asimov has been the wine critic there for 20 years. His writing is clear, concise and his wine reviews are approachable. He also writes often about the lower priced wines and less well-known regions which is more important than ever these days.
SommSelect Daily Discovery - SommSelect is a wine retailer business started by Master Sommelier Ian Cauble in 2014. I learned about Ian in the 2012 documentary SOMM. I actually haven't purchased anything yet from SS, but I subscribe to their Daily Discovery emails just because they have such well written emails that describe their wine offerings from all over the world. I especially find their taste descriptors to be helpful in writing my own wine reviews. Their Blog section has great informative articles as well as recipes. If you do decide to subscribe, they are definitely more posh than the typical wine club but you can choose smaller bottle counts to keep things reasonable.
Odedi's Wine Reviews Blog - I follow Odedi on my Delectable wine app profile and he's very prolific with his wine reviews. Many of these wines are widely available and offer a solid value for the money, what many of us wine geeks call QPR: Quality Price Ratio.
